"You can't stop me from havin' who I want." ~ Annie Ridd (Honeysuckle Weeks)

John's favorite, Annie is a cheerful, bubbly, blonde farm girl who adores her elder brother. Younger than the determined Lizzie, she is the baby of the family and much spoiled. When her intentions are to marry Tom Faggus, however, a cousin and notorious highwayman, her mother puts her foot down.

Knowing of the alliance between John and Lorna Doone,  Annie has her own cards to play, and John cannot forbid her marriage. Tom vows to give up his profession and become an honest man, something for which the Ridds take with a dash of salt. When Lorna comes to live at the Ridd farm, and their world is torn apart by the fury of Carver, Tom takes on a mission to London that keeps him away for a time.

When at last they are wed, happiness prevails. Tom is a good husband, a kind man, but soon his boredom in such a trivial life leads them both into danger as, leaving her pregnant and alone, he joins up with Monmouth's army. Annie must send John after him in fear, and await what is inevitable... for with war, one can loose much indeed.

Character Traits

Annie is spoiled, by John if not by her mother, and determined to have her own way. Considerably less prejudiced against the Doones than her sister Lizzie, she is open to the idea of Lorna being a part of the family, if only for John's sake. Along the way she falls for her godfather, Tom Faggus, a notorious highwayman wanted throughout the west country, and makes the shaky decision to marry him. A likeable but undeniably simple girl, she puts her brother's life in danger for the sake of Tom.

Memorable Moments:

Probably one of the two scenes in which Annie shows true defiance against both her brother and mother. In the first, she confronts John about his own choice of love when he condemns her intentions of marrying Tom. In the second, she defies her mother, who is distressed to learn that John will support the marriage unwillingly because of his own engagement.

Memorable Quotes:

"You can't stop me havin' who I want."

"What does it matter, as long as you're happy?"

"He's good and kind!"

"I'll only be happy with Tom. And John must have Lorna. We can't help who we love."
