Counselor Doone

"Your grandson lead a group of Doones into town to trade. They were set upon by a gang of thieves. This woman's husband was the ringleader. Ridd killed our brother Richard before he was shot himself."

"If I were you, Carver. I'd keep my mouth shut! You've caused enough trouble as it is. Who authorized the attack on Porlock?"

"Some men inspire loyalty and devotion, while others like myself, merely respect. I have spent years making certain that you were the next captain. I hope to God I haven't been wasting my time!"

"If I would have known about the attack on the Ridd farm I would have advised against it. It was hasty and ill-advised, and I'm sorry for it. There should be no more bad blood between us."

Sarah Ridd: "My son was raised an honest man!"

Counselor: "Not the best preparation for life among the Doones, I'll grant you."

"There is a secret that binds the two of you together more closely than you think. Your fathers killed each other at Porlock. Of course, there is no reason why this should come between you..."

"Ensor would be ashamed of you! You made a mistake! You underestimated them."

"We lost 10 men at Sedgemore, and another 6 after that. That leaves barely more than 30 fit to fight."

"We can't defend this place forever! They're hanging anyone who fought with Monmouth. If we stay here they'll kill us all in the end. We should think about leaving."

"For heaven's sake! Forget about her now! You've lost her."

"Is this how you think a leader should behave ... getting drunk at all hours of the day? You have responsibilities. It's time to start taking them seriously."

" Put your mind to it. You can achieve anything. You have greatness in you. Your men would walk through fire for you. Don't let them down. We must pledge our allegiance to Monmouth before it's too late. We can go home to our lands in glory ... or we can stay here and rot. That is your choice."
