A Family Disarrangement

When John returns home from the Doone Valley, he hears his family arguing.

Sarah "I won't have it, you're a thief!"

Tom "A reformed thief."

John "Hey, Hey. What's going on?"

Lizzie "Mother say Annie can't marry Tom."

Sarah "A respectable girl, marrying a highwayman."

Annie "He's good and kind."

Sarah "They'll hang him just the same. Tell her you forbid it, John. John?"

John "I can't. I'm in no position to condemn Annie's choice."

Sarah "Why not?"

John "Because I'm betrothed to Lorna Doone."

Sarah "Lorna Doone! You want to marry a Doone?" She walks over to John and is about to slap him, but he puts his hands up.

John "Mother, I wanted to tell you before, but I didn't know how. I know it seems impossible, when you know her. When you know her you'll love her as I do."

Sarah "You presume a good deal. And you!"

Annie "Will only be happy with Tom. And John must have Lorna. We can't help who we love."

Sarah "Aye, you must both follow your own hearts. I can't stop you."

Annie kneels at her mother's feet and John holds his mothers hand.

Lizzie walks up to John and slaps his face. "How could you even think of marrying one of our father's murderers?"

John "She's isn't like them."

Lizzie "They are all the same."
